Rain

“Rain” is a project that combines the mediums of Photography/Video and AfterEffects. After renting a studio to shoot the aesthetic I seeked, I landed on the image above as it truly captured the mood of my ideation. To create my envisioned rain effect, each individual water droplet and drip was created through “particle” and “drizzle” maps. To concisely touch on the behind the scenes of this piece, first, I drew each drip manually by combining rectangles and ellipses. Next, I moved onto the appearance of the droplets. Once I was able to construct the basic “stills” of the water, I dove into the animation process. Though the final product is intended to be a still piece, each water droplet and drip needed to be animated in order to have a realistic feel.

While animating, each factor of the water’s physics were taken into account and manipulated such as size variation, shape, gravity, velocity, longevity, turbulence, displacement, and much more! Once I animated the water’s refraction, I needed to refine the appearance of the water itself such as light source, softness, contrast, opacity, blur, etc. Brief captures of my process and work flow are below. Although the process was extensive, this project was unique and satisfying to complete in that it symbiotically combined technical execution with artistic expression.
