Faces

“Faces” is a graphic based collage of illustrative doodles and abstract portraits. The ensemble contains elements that radiate a slight vintage feel with influences such as Basquiat, E.C. Segar, Matisse, etc. Taking a closer look, you’ll also find components of African Art, Tribal Art, Street Art, Comic Pop Art, and more. Interestingly, this retro piece exhibits not only a varied spread visually, but was constructed using three different softwares, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Procreate. Any element that wasn’t created digitally from the start, I hand-drew and photographed to then take into one or a combination of these programs to modify and carry out my fine tuning. Just like any collage art, this piece was formed bit by bit, or better said in this case, face by face

First, I needed to think of an overall consistency in “vibe” to lay the foundation because while the presentation may appear random or spontaneous, I actually faced the most trial and error with this piece than any other on my site! Once I decided on my piece’s tone, I continued further by drafting mood boards after each character. Attention to color, style, texture, placement, and even facial features and expression were all thought through as each detail counted. I wanted the work convey hints of playfulness, yet not too silly, to display itself as organic/ rustic, yet not unrefined, and to be visually stimulating while possessing a subtleness or lowkey quality.
